Getting Started With an Easy Do It Yourself Woodworking Plan: Bird Feeder

More and more people are becoming immersed in woodworking all the time. It’s certainly a wonderful craft to get involved with because it allows you a way to express your creativity while creating beautiful pieces at the same time. For anyone who’s still new to woodworking, this is the perfect project to get started with. You want to start off with a simple project so you’re not taking on too much and getting overwhelmed.

First you need to cut out the proper sizes of wood. This is going to give birds an ample angle to stand on where they won’t fall and also make the bird feeder look nice. Then you want to drill about a 1 ¼” hole centered about four inches up from the bottom. The smaller hole should be directly above the larger one and should only be ¼” in size.

Remember that good woodworkers always measure twice and cut once and this is a rule to live by. This is the rule of woodworkers, because you’re always going to be better off having to cut extra off a piece that’s too large rather than having to start over from scratch because you cut a piece too short. Then you want to cut two sides at 1 ½ x 6” and the front just a bit larger at 1 ½ x 8”. Now you need to put together all the different pieces.

Hold each piece as you’re gluing it together, for about a count of ten as this will give the glue time to bond to both pieces. Countersink two holes in the back which you’ll use to mount the sides and glue the two sides onto the back. When you’re gluing pieces of wood together you should always hold for a count of ten seconds before letting go. After everything’s glued together, you want to put two nails in each joining to make sure that everything’s secure.

Trim off any extra screen on the bottom, as birds could get their feet caught in it if you don’t. Now you cut the dowel down and glue it onto the smaller hole you made earlier, then glue and nail on the two roof pieces so they come together and join up nicely. This is a very simple do it yourself woodworking plan but one that can still be difficult for beginners. This is a really basic do it yourself woodworking project that even a novice can master, and a great project to use to get your foot in the door.
